Here at Wix Squared, we have once again collaborated with creative consultant, textile designer and India aficionado, Rosanna Falconer, to create two new insider family-friendly itineraries to Rajasthan; catering to families with toddlers and/or teenagers.

Rosanna lives for much of the year in Jaipur with her young family. She travelled extensively throughout India during her fashion career, and more recently for her exquisite homeware collection, Rosanna’s tried-and-tested family-friendly itineraries are ideal for families looking for an exquisite, enriching and inspiring adventure discovering the most majestic parts of the state of Rajasthan and beyond. With Wix Squared’s unrivalled family holiday expertise, exclusive access on the ground, combined with Rosanna’s best kept secrets revealed, the hidden gems of this destination can be truly uncovered.

Rosanna explains, Rajasthan energises and inspires me with its colours, scents and sights but it is through my children’s eyes that I have been able to unlock its true wonder even in the everyday. Monkeys on a rooftop, the percussion of dhoop aarti in the temple or the sweetness of a bowl of kulfi falooda all inspire a joy in my daughters that we had not encountered on travels elsewhere. I’m delighted to partner with Wix Squared on this itinerary for the family with our tried-and-tested places to stay, eat and experience. Since 2022, we have lived in Jaipur for nearly a year in total so we have been able to uncover hidden gems and put established favourites through their paces. Wix Squared’s expert team can tailor the itinerary to you – whether you have a mixed generation group or very young children. I can’t wait to share more with you!”

Jaipur with tiny tots in tow

Raj Mahal

The itinerary starts in Jaipur for 3 nights where your family will meet their driver and receive a VIP welcome. The Laalee is a luxury boutique hotel, nestled 15 minutes outside of the Old City of Jaipur. This new hotel celebrates the charming Indian culture and Krishna, most notably in the magnificent hand-painted frescoes throughout by co-founder Shan Bhatnagar.

Rosanna explains, “Boutique hotels can often feel the reserve of romantic breaks but this one excludes warmth and hospitality for all. The plunge pool, the luscious little garden and of course the fresh, seasonal, slow-cooked vegetarian menu by co-founder Devyani Bhatnagar. It all feels like you’re staying in the home of fabulously creative friends.”

Families can enjoy an early morning visit to the flower market, a kaleidoscope of colour and fragrance before receiving a private blessing, and all before breakfast! After returning to the hotel, the next adventure awaits – little ones will be wowed by the royal residence on their privately guided tour of the City Palace where they will discover hidden chambers, and retrace the steps of the royals through their exquisite gardens and courtyards. Inquisitive younger family members will love spotting the world’s largest stone sundial across the road at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jantar Mantar, the Jaipur observatory, dedicated to architectural and astronomical masterpieces.

Wix Squared’s guide will then take families to experience the bazaar walk, meandering through the lanes of the walled city to observe artisans and craftsman creating specialised embroidery, bangles and miniature paintings, and be immersed in the city’s majestic and captivating culture. Artistic minds will love our private blue pottery masterclass, where families will learn this age-old art form and create their own masterpiece.

Little Princes and Princesses of Jaipur

Jaipur

The next day, young princes and princesses will be spellbound by their visit to Amber Fort, an exquisite palace made from pale yellow and pink sandstone and marble with underground tunnels. It overlooks Maota Lake. Families can then follow in Rosanna’s footsteps and learn the ancient tradition of block painting in a private workshop, using a combination of hand-carved wooden stamps and colourful dyes made from natural materials.

We also recommend enjoying an afternoon of escapism, away from the city, at Dera Amer, a sanctuary for rescued elephants created by the Singh family located in 180 acres of preserved  wilderness where families can reminisce over lunch or supper in a special location, with the elephants!

Wildlife lovers might also enjoy a visit to Jhalana Leopard Reserve, just 20 minutes away from the city centre. Rosanna says, “Jhalana Leopard Reserve is just 20 minutes away from the city centre; we saw two leopards thanks to our guide Hemant Dabi.”

Wildlife wonders in Ranthambhore National Park

Chhatra sagar

Take the first class train to Ranthambhore, India’s most celebrated Tiger Reserve and onto SUJÁN Sher Bagh, a luxury safari camp that families will call home for the next two nights, alongside its resident tigers and leopards.

For foodie loving parents and budding chefs we recommend the jungle cooking class in the outdoor kitchen where families will learn traditional recipes and explore the culinary concepts behind Indian cuisine.

Spot ruins of palaces dotted around the jungle, and witness tigers, leopards and other exotic wildlife in their natural habitat, on a morning safari.  We also recommend an afternoon visit to Dastkar, an NGO supporting traditional Indian craftspeople, to help craftspeople gain access to urban customers. After a truly enriching day, share tales of the day by the crackling campfire.

Wix Squared can help you discover Ranthambhore Fort with a family treasure hunt throughout this must visit UNESCO site overlooking the jungle and featuring temples, tanks, towering walls and vast gates.

Rosanna comments, “The luck didn’t follow us to Ranthambore National Park for tiger spotting, but we did witness sloth bears and saltwater crocodiles with guide Suraj Bai Meena (the first and only female guide in the park). What a privilege for the children’s first experience of exotic animals to be away from the confines of a zoo”.

Fairytale endings in a fort

Jodhpur

The final days can be spent relaxing and unwinding at the sumptuous Six Senses Fort Barwara, housed in a 14th century walled fort, it took a decade to construct, conserving and respecting the original fort as it was transformed to the hotel of today.  Six Senses Fort Barwara is a total sanctuary, surrounded by rugged wilderness beaming with wildlife, the forest, and the Barwara lake. The former residence of a Rajasthani Royal Family, the hotel is fit for a king, and serves as the ultimate place to unwind, relax and rejuvenate for the final part of this extraordinary family adventure.

Rosanna explains, “There are so many options for families at this hotel! From making lip balms to cooking pizzas with ingredients from the organic garden and a ‘Grow’ play club so fabulous it was second only to the pool on the children’s wish list. Food is a stand-out here using ingredients from the property or local farmers. Our family’s favourites: gatta curry, the banana cake, the golden milk porridge and the jodhpuri pulao. The team are just as exacting with every aspect of sustainability – Rohit who heads this up gets guests involved in the Earth Lab – from upcycling office paper to re-imagining bottles for candles. Catering to all ages and abilities, it is a part of the hotel to be enjoyed by all ages from 3 to 93!”

Our 8 night ‘Family Holiday to Rajasthan’ itinerary starts from approximately £3,350 per person, based on 4 people travelling and includes The Laalee, SUJÁN Sherbagh and Six Senses Fort Bawara.

Exploring further afield with Teenagers

Laalee rosanna jaipur

Still start the itinerary in Rosanna’s favourite Indian city, Jaipur, and perhaps include a hot air balloon ride or explore the streets by e-bike. Then travel west on Indigo Air’s new flight direct to Jaisalmer.

Just outside Jaisalmer, we suggest a couple of nights at Suryagarh. Lush palms, hot-pink bougainvillea and sturdy towers mark the entrance to your home from home. Explore the breathtaking desert citadel of Jaisalmer before an afternoon discovering Rajasthan’s lost cities, forgotten fortresses and ancient temples, concluding with the all important camel ride through the Thar dunes.

Rosanna explains, The golden city of honey stone, lace-like in its intricacy, is known for its bustling ‘living fort’ but it’s the opulence of the havelis that captured my heart. We stayed at Suryagarh Jaisalmer which rises like a mirage of a golden palace as you approach. An alghoza musician plays every morning in the courtyard over breakfast. As well as the fort, we loved camel rides at sunset into the dunes”

Continue the adventure to The Rohet Wilderness Camp, set amidst the expansive shrublands of the Thar that offers families an otherworldly experience. Spend the morning on horseback a great experience for all the family, providing a deep insight into the rich culture and traditions of this region of Marwar, as well as offering fun game-viewing opportunities spotting herds of rare and famous Black Buck antelope, the Blue Bull antelope and the petite Chinkara. In the afternoon, enjoy a village walk to meet the locals who are notoriously friendly and will welcome families into their homes to give them a taste of their customs and ceremonies including the opium tea ceremony (!)

Conclude your time in Rajasthan at RAAS Jodhpur, which is overshadowed by Mehrangarh Fort, an awe-inspiring 15th-century fort looming 400 feet above the Jodhpur skyline. Here guests can enjoy a half day tour of the Old Market and blue city walk, a cooking demonstration, followed by experiencing the colourful worlds of tie and dye printing. Wix Squared guests will witness and then try this artistry firsthand, returning home with their own masterpiece. We can also arrange private access to the Fort after the gates are closed to tourists (additional costs apply).

This 9 night ‘Family Holiday to Rajasthan’ itinerary starts from approximately £3,300 per person, based on 4 people travelling and includes The Laalee, Suryagarh, the Rohet Wilderness Camp and RAAS Jodhpur.
