We are thrilled to have once again collaborated with creative consultant and textile designer Rosanna Falconer, to create a new insider adventure in Sri Lanka.

Rosanna, drawn to destinations that celebrate heritage crafts, exquisite interior design and decorative arts, was keen to escape the August monsoon in India and so we recommended Sri Lanka as the perfect alternative for an enriching and exciting summer holiday escape. The island is brimming with inspiration from handloom weaving and mask painting to the refined architecture of colonial Galle and Geoffrey Bawa’s serene Lunuganga gardens.

“I’m writing to you from the absolute comfort of our car in Sri Lanka. My goodness, what a view. Undulating hills, lofty palms and colonial houses, all basking in sunshine as we pass along immaculately maintained roads”.

This is how Rosanna’s Sri Lankan adventure began from the window of their chauffeur-driven car, with stunning scenery unfolding like a film. For families craving sunshine, culture and discovery in one seamless trip, Sri Lanka is the perfect introduction to Asia. Rosanna focused this trip on southern Ceylon so as to keep long drives to a minimum, but we can also navigate our guests to more remote parts of the country by domestic flight, seaplane or by road through beautiful tea plantations and cultural UNESCO heritage sites in the north.

The Beach Retreat

Amanwella

Wix Squared recommends starting or ending their summer adventure on the coast. Cape Weligama, perched on a golden clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean. Young explorers will love the Forest School kids’ club where they will learn how to build rafts, sketch nature, delight in scavenger hunts, forest obstacle courses, tree climbing and star navigation, while parents will be mesmerised by surfers carving waves at the beach club below. Villas are secluded yet spacious, soundtracked by tropical birds and the sea, home to blue whales which can be viewed from a private charter boat or from the sky by helicopter.

Wix Squared also recommends Amanwella as a firm beachfront favourite. Set amongst 37 acres of coconut trees on a golden crescent-shaped bay, Amanwella is a dream for those who crave both adventure and downtime. Nature-based activities like shell hunting and pottery making workshops add gentle rhythm to a little one’s day, while older children and adults can enjoy surf lessons or guided walks along the coastline. Villas offer the privacy and space, while the resort’s calm, contemporary design and attentive service ensure guests can truly relax. The relaxed dining, serene pools and plenty of shaded spots to unwind at Amanwella balances barefoot luxury with thoughtful touches perfectly.

Exploring Galle Fort

Galle

No visit to Sri Lanka is complete without exploring Galle Fort. Staying inside Galle Fort is like stepping into a living museum, yet it is surprisingly family friendly. Wix Squared can arrange treasure hunts through cobbled streets, mask painting workshops, handloom weaving by artisans who have preserved their craft for decades and young adventurers will love climbing the 17th-century ramparts. With safe, walkable streets and ply of history brought to life, Galle Fort makes cultural exploration fun and accessible.

Amangalla is the grande dame of the city – originally a 17th century Dutch military headquarters and in 1865 becoming the New Oriental Hotel. Wonderful food and thoughtful touches like butler service and a complimentary afternoon tea on the Sunset Balcony.

Alternatively, Fort Bazaar is a cool boutique option – a restored spice merchant’s house with Teardrop’s signature contemporary, design-led aesthetic that still honours its past. They offer spacious, elegant family rooms, at reasonable prices in a central location.

A Garden Pause

Lunuganga

Rosanna shares: “Lunuganga rendered me speechless and racing to change our flights home! It’s the kind of setting that makes me long to spend a week in its gardens, absorbing the magnificence and creative spirit. Every corner, every vista is drenched in thoughtful design — so brilliant it feels effortless.”

Spending a night inside Sri Lanka’s star architect Geoffrey Bawa’s iconic lakeside country estate on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Lunuganga, will ensure the perfect end to an unforgettable holiday. Set on 12 acres, peeking out from the jungle on the banks of glistening Dedduwa Lake; this white 1930s bungalow is tropical modernism at its very best. Here, discover rice paddies, an inviting lagoon, butterfly-shaped ponds, enchanting corners and immaculate lawns.
